It is a Saab 96! Berang and other Oppos what should I look for and ask when I inspect the car? I am mentally preparing myself for a 47 year old car that may break down as I plan on daily driving it 3 out of 4 seasons. It has some rust and dents and is in driver condition. Today I try to see if I can get together the money then I will arrange to see it tomorrow. The freewheel is deactivated which is a disappointment to me, but something I will fix in the future. For some of you daily driving a 47 year old car may be crazy, but it has been a dream of mind ever since I found out the Saab 96 exists.

Mine is my only car and has been pretty reliable.

Things you should look for:

excessive play in the drive pulley for the fan and alternator, this can indicate bad balance shaft bearings (also if the oil light comes on at idle, may indicate same problem).

Transmission. Listen for any rumbling, whining, or growling. The transmission is a weak spot on these. They almost all whine a little, but a loud whine or any other odd noises probably indicate a rebuild is needed.

Clutch judder. May indicate a leaking crank seal on the engine, or worn out transmission mount. Replacing either is a lot of work.

Check out all of the bushings and ball joints, CV boots, etc. If the car shimmies under strong acceleration this can mean the CVs need to be re-greased or rebuilt. If they make cracking sounds around corners then they need to be dealt with.

Rust. Rust on the leading edge of the floor is very common, but not a huge deal to weld up. Check inside the fenders, around the bottom of the windshield (difficult to fix) , inside the trunk, etc.

Missing parts - some of this stuff is really hard to find! A lot of parts can be found cheap, but the saab guys know what is hard to find and it can cost you.

run the wipers and heater blower, see if they squeak or stall, etc.

Otherwise all the normal old car stuff. Drive it, check it doesn’t overheat, drives straight, isn’t making any weird noises.

Yo a link? My dad is looking for a car since he wrecked his Viggen and has some sort of disorder where he only drives Saabs.

Suggest you look for an expert to review your automotive taste and consider a re-calibration.

It is the 4 stroke V4. This particular car is a 1969. A 2 stroke would be nice but they are more difficult to find.
